Space and movement in illustrations - The CreativeMindClass Blog

Mar 16, 2022

Since as a young child I've been drawn to paint and use my hands. This has always been the easiest way to express myself. Growing in Taiwan, pursuing an artistic profession was thought of as a negative thing, and I was often instructed by my parents to learn deeper into practical topics in order to avoid ending being hungry on the streets.

It is a blessing that my mom was always encouraging me to do whatever I wanted and did anything she could to assist me achieve my objectives. Following my return to the United States and graduating high school, I made the decision that I wanted to go after art as a career.

I was accepted to ArtCenter College of design, studied Illustration intended to go into the feature animation field. Along the way, I discovered motion graphics and was enthralled by its versatility , as well as it's amazing art work done by those I respect.

How would you describe your style?

The process is still in the road to discovering a style I am able to confidently claim as my personal. I am prone to experiment with new things every so often... A month, I'll be drawn to doing something very vibrant, and then I'll want to try my hand at the more natural-looking colors. I'll get really into a driving style for a time, one day suddenly I'll become bored and would like to experiment with something that's more built on forms.

Or sometimes I'll try to blend two different things that seem fascinating to me like I'm on an endless quest to discover and learn. However, after experimenting a bit here and there I'm starting to realize there are some patterns, shapes, and colors I'm drawn to, perhaps that's a start of an aesthetic?

That's a big reason why I love being at Oddfellows and sometimes, I can't believe I am fortunate to work with an amazing group of people. We are required to adjust to various styles from project to project, virtually every project has to be completed using different methods as well as I'm learning new things from my peers every single day.

What's the secret to drawing your artwork?

I enjoy drawing illustrations on subjects that I am intrigued or curious in and then add my own twist to it.

However, my main goal is having enjoyable. It is my opinion that having fun is key to making anything and viewers will be able to tell if a creator had pleasure doing something... the extra shine.

While fighting the pandemic, seeing our studio and my peers working hard in helping the local community In the end, I decided to start a Patreon called Joy&Frens, where half of my net income goes to charities that my patrons choose. There, I post Tips & Tricks, process videos, ask friends to join me for collaborations, and also share my knowledge.
