In this video interview animator Eva Munich shares her journey of turning around her creative track and discovering her distinctive way of working as a 3D character designer. She explains her decision to move to London as well as her experience at the Pictoplasma conference, and the way she landed a representation as director for Greenhouse Animation. The interview also focuses on her X-Files project, which was created by Lemonade Insurance, and explains her animation workflow as well as how she worked with the sound designer Phil Brookes.

Eva provides tips for visual artists looking to change their career, including choosing the best technique that matches their vision, and embracing their uniqueness, and making sure to take their "weirdness" serious.

About seeking opportunities and changing your the direction of your career

Before moving to London in the year 2017 I was in a tiny town in Germany and freelanced for a while as an After Effects animator. There weren't many creative challenges My skills slowed rapidly and I became extremely frustrated.

Making the move to London and getting to know everyone who is a wonderful animator in the city gave me an enormous boost. It was like "Damn I'm with all the cool kids now, better start putting on my best."

After attending this year's Pictoplasma event, I made the decision to join the universe of interesting character creators. The realization came quickly that my characters work most effectively when they're in 3D and I'm learning from scratch, which is hard but very satisfying!

My work caught the attention at Greenhouse Animation, and I'm now represented as a director by them.

about the X-Files project and the secrets of socks disappearing

One of the first client projects I did using my new style is the Covered by Lemonade clip.

Lemonade Insurance approached me to make a piece for the regular Instagram collaborative with artists. Since the company is a content insurer and the concept of adorable household items that are in danger popped into my head. That's how the X-Files project came to life.

The last winter, I was on locking down and rewatching the x-files. Therefore, the idea of a classic alien abduction seemed obvious. The problem was that all characters had to remain in the same location at the time of finalization so that the animation loop could be closed so none of them could really be abducted. That is the reason I got thought of making the washing machine pop open and one pink sock fly up to the UFO.

When I was creating my UFO and giving it small legs, I saw the way everything can be put in place. The UFO has lost its socks and is working to retrieve it!

I find that creating a good story best involves combining different things that seem unconnected initially. In order to make something surprising take place and also to give inanimate objects an identity by putting funny faces onto them is the most fun to me!

 The animation workflow

My work process starts by drawing sketches of my characters, and then a storyboard. I turned it into an animatic for Lemonade to help communicate the concept as well as the time. From there, I go into Cinema 4D and model all my characters. This is also where I test out techniques and design frames.

Once the animation in Cinema 4D is done, I switch over to After Effects to do the compositing process and finalization. The light beam that is pink, for example, is done by using After Effects.

about the sound effects and working in conjunction with Phill Brookes

This was my first project I had with a sound designer, Phil Brookes who really rocked it! The work he did elevates the entire clip to the next level and ties everything together perfectly! It was an amazing project to work on I'm looking forward to create more of this one!

We've had a conversation with Phil about his process for producing sounds to be used in his X-Files project. Listen to the conversation of Phil Brookes.

In the present I'm working on learning ways to rig characters as well as how to create gorgeous textures using Cinema 4D and Redshift. I experiment with combining 2D and 3D animation, and I'm looking forward to seeing where my character design journey leads me to next!

Artists can get tips about how to alter the direction of their careers

Some tips I can give for anyone looking to switch directions:

  1. Choose the method that fits your needs best and learn about it! Motion design can feel like you need to know every single program there is. It's just not feasible.
  2. Take your weirdness seriously and don't minimize the significance of it. Your uniqueness is yours. Your artistic voice is unique.
  3. Take your time and embrace your ideas. Whatever is happening in your mind accept it, and then make it!
