Painting and installation work - The CreativeMindClass Blog

Aug 6, 2022

Nicole Mueller is a San Francisco-based visual artist. Her work includes large-scale paintings installation, murals, and murals which mimic the effect that stained glass can produce. Driven by process the abstract pieces are saturated and constructed using layers of collage-like patterns. Her art explores the variety of colors, states of flux, dichotomies within painting, the fundamental transition of the human condition, and the boundary between interior and exterior, the tangible and intangible.

My background

I'm primarily a painter who is a full-time artist in San Francisco, California.

My background also includes painting murals, installation work and doing the field of arts administration as well as career development.

I took art classes in The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore in Maryland, where I resided for many years before moving out into West Coast.

Another big part of my job and purpose involves hosting Beyond the Studio with co-artist Amanda Adams, a podcast designed to promote transparency in the art world by conducting interviews with contemporary artists on their careers paths.

My personal style

The majority of my work has been intuitive that is driven by process. abstract and highly saturated made of color and layers of collage-like forms.

I make large-scale paintings with light-activated glass installations which mimic the effect of stained glass, and murals. Within this work I'm exploring dichotomies and state of flux and the boundary between outside and inside, both tangible and intangible.

About the key to making my work

I think that showing up regularly at your work is essential. For me, developing a studio practice and setting goals for myself to continue moving forward made it easier for me to prioritize my time when life gets in the way, as well as taking the time to slow down to rest or even take breaks (for a day up to a month or perhaps for a longer period of time).
