"Let's start with the adjectives to best describe my work: bold as well as expressive, and rich."

Claudia's personal background

"My Name is Claudia Melchor, I am officially trained as an architect. However, I've had a passion for painting and the 2D mediums ever since I could recall."

What was the process of transferring the concept of architecture into mixed-media images?

"When the moment came to make a decision about my career, I was told, as other people, not to pursue a career in arts. The advice was well-informed and I followed. After completing a Bachelor's and Master degree in Architecture. I found myself completely bored of the work in the front of a computer. Then , during my gap year following university, I began creating illustrations, artworks and other products that featured my own designs, and I had never felt happier!

All of it started right when I was offered a position in an architectural office which I am now working on alongside my illustration business and ongoing studies in the field of art history. I'm hoping to get rid of the job in corporate architecture soon enough and concentrate fully on what I enjoy doing and using mixed media techniques.

I'm hoping that my experience will help people who are undecided about the best course of study. I hope it helps you realize that the art degree does not matter, you can be an artist with any background and the best thing is, this will make your art more unique. Of course, attending an art institute will be an amazing time!"

How would you describe your illustration style?

"I think describing your own style is a difficult task. I asked my friends about this one and their descriptions of the style couldn't be more precise. They said my art looks like my paintings are in movement like the wind is blowing through the artwork and dropping colors onto everything it comes into contact with. It's impossible to find a better description of my work than that.

I like layering textures and mixing a wide range of colors. I'm the ultimateist in this regard. If I am able to restrict a color palette and the more expansive the spectrum of color gets.

In a glance at some of my subject options, some of my most favorite subjects to paint are landscapes with mountains and the ocean, since it is a reminder of my home town of Tenerife is a charming little island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

However, I also create human-like characters that have exaggerated features as well as vibrant skin. Also, of course, I will always incorporate some architectural element - the six years of studying architecture have to show up somewhere."

What is the key for creating mixed-media artwork?

"I think that the most important thing in my art is not to plan excessively in advance. In reality, this approach can be successful but it can also fail However, not being over the end result really gives you the freedom to play around with your painting.

I like seeing the process of coloring , painting and changing my mind in my final pieces. It shows my relationship to the paper, to my surroundings, as well as to the paint. You can trace my decision-making process to the end result.

I enjoy being able work with my hands to mix up my personal paints. All you require to create my work is lots of different substances (doesn't need to be anything expensive, but I enjoy mixing media), a very loose hand, and the courage to layer paint and start with a blank canvas."
