When Pooja Bavishi made the decision to launch her own ice cream business, Malai, she had an unambiguous, personal view. "I invented Malai to pay homage to the tastes I grew up with when I was a child Indian American in a popular and mainstream way," she says.
"Everyone suffers from the ice cream experience of their childhood which is often associated with visiting the local ice cream store for a delicious treat, and sharing an ice cream cup with your loved ones," Pooja says. The nostalgia infusion can be observed in Malai from a stand at market halls and food markets within the area to freezers at grocery stores, pop-up carts throughout New York City, and an enticing flagship shop located in Brooklyn that offers both national and local delivery.
