Installation and painting - The CreativeMindClass Blog

Nicole Mueller is a San Francisco-based visual artist. Her work includes large-scale paintings as well as murals and installations that mimic the effects that stained glass can produce. Inspiring by the process the abstract pieces are saturated and constructed using layers of collage-like patterns. Her work explores the complexity of color, the state of flux, dichotomies within painting, the fundamental transition of the human condition, and the threshold between interior and exterior, both tangible and intangible.

About my background

I'm primarily a painter, living and working full-time as an artist in San Francisco, California.

My experience also covers mural painting, installation work, as well as working in the field of arts administration as well as professional development.

I studied painting at The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore in Maryland, where I resided for many years before making the move to the west coast.

A significant portion of my mission and work is hosting Beyond the Studio with co-artist Amanda Adams, a podcast that aims to increase awareness of the art industry by conducting interviews with contemporary artists about their career paths.

My style

The majority of my work has been instinctual, driven by process, abstract, highly saturated, made of color and layers of collage-like patterns.

I paint large-scale, light-activated window installations to mimic the visual effects of stained glass as well as murals. Within this work I'm exploring dichotomies and changes in state, the boundary between interior and exterior, both tangible and intangible.

The key to creating my art

I'm of the opinion that being consistent in your attendance at your work is essential. For me, making a habit of studio work as well as setting goals for myself to push forward allowed me to focus on my work when life gets in my way. Also, taking the time to slow down and take a break or rest (for days or a month, or perhaps for a longer period of time).
