Greater control of Community notification -- for you and your members

Jul 6, 2022

We've updated community notification settings for a better user experience (and lesser email messages). Here's what's new.

How do you let members know what's happening within your neighborhood?

It is important to inform your customers know about new conversations and engage them with more conversations -- but you also need to give the members control over their experiences and limit the amount of notifications they receive. We also learned from our creators how important it is to strike this delicate equilibrium.

The latest version of the community features that you and your users are more in control of notifications. That means livelier conversations, less flooded with emails, and a community platform that brings both of you to each other.

Manage your personal notification settings as a creator or member

Members of the community and authors can now choose which notifications they'd like to get for each topic: New posts or replies to posts you've made or new responses to your comments.

If you sign in to a community as a member then go to Settings and then click "Edit" in the Notifications. (Creators are able to find this on the Notifications tab in your Account Settings.)

It will show all the subjects that you're following in the community. You can simply check or uncheck boxes to control what types of notifications you would like to receive for every topic.

In this case, for instance, you may wish to receive updates for postings, comments and replies on a topic that's time sensitive like Live Events as well as Announcements. For other topics it is possible to receive only updates each time someone posts the post, or deactivate announcements for that subject completely.

You may also toggle the notifications off and on using the buttons "Mute All" as well as "Unmute the entire".

You can also modify your notification preferences per topic quickly from your "All topics"page or on an individual page for each topic. Select the bell icon after which you can set your preferences for notifications.

Set default notifications for a topic

Creators may also choose to establish the default notifications settings for every subject in the community. This will give you more control over the member experience.

Instead of sending notifications to your members for every blog post, you can choose which subjects your members are notified about and which kinds of notifications they get.

Here's how:

On the Community tab of your dashboard, click on "All topics". Then, click the "..." next topic you'd like to modify and then select "Edit Topic". From there, choose the settings for your notifications under "Default notification settings".

Users can alter these notification settings at any time in their user accounts. If users haven't altered their settings, they'll default to settings that were set by the creator for each topic.

We hope these community updates create a better experience for both you and your fellow members. Thank you for taking the time to read!
