Custom-designed and frequently hand-crafted top hats, masks, butterflies, crowns, paintings as backdrops, methods to record details, inspired by old noir movies from the 1930s and 40s. A lot of time and dedication go into each high-quality photograph taken by the talented Italian artist Giulia Valente.

We have asked Giulia what her secret to creating her artful photography was. This is her tale.

"I completed my degree from Padua University with degrees in Music, Art, and Theatre in 2006. I have always been attracted by art: one aspect I like when I live in Italy is that art is everywhere, so it's easy to draw inspiration.

My style is defined as fine-art photography. I see continuity between photography and painting. In some ways, photography is painting's younger sister. Photos, in addition to paintings, are my main sources when I'm planning-to-shoot and retouch a new project."

"Giovanni Gastel," the recent deceased Italian photographer once stated that one must throw out 10000 good ideas before getting the right one. I try, in my own way to implement this method. Actually, I keep many ideas in my journal, sketches, notes, and thoughts that are bound to remain on paper forever.

The primary step in working on a new project is planning. It is essential to make decisions that define the concept, and then draw sketches, gather objects or props... It can be a long and stressful process due to the fact that the photography that is required demands a great deal of focus and even an obsession with the fine details, those things that you may not immediately think about, but can make all the difference."

The Caterpillar (from "Wonderland" series) Year 2021. Model: Ilaria Fracasso. Dress Blue Lady Couture. Hat: Bizarre Noir. Photo, concept, styling, set, hair, makeup: Giulia Valente

What was the key to making your caterpillar photographs?

"In the particular situation of the Caterpillar Project, I tried to determine the characteristics that distinguish the person, making him recognizable: the blue color and the hookah smokes and the wings that he reveals when he transforms into a butterfly. But as well the manner of speaking - which is a bit conceited and vain. After that, I attempted to bring all these elements in a cohesive manner, and combine them with the style and style of the image I imagined.

The 3rd of May, 2021 an exhibition of my selected works was launched in the the Laboratorio Cardin(Padua, Italy). I am very excited and grateful as this is my first show."
