When I'm free I like to do 30 mins to 1 hour research or other explorations in which I do what I want to do the day. Doing this has helped me grow, but it also allowed me to discover which things I enjoyed.
Today, I am able to pay attention to color, light, and how to explain textures in a simple way so that I don't need to go overboard in all of it. My preference is to maintain my designs very close to the real world however, in the future I want to try to push shapes more and become more artistic with my art.
Before I begin painting, typically, I like laying the main forms first either in BW or straight in the color. If I feel it's necessary first, I begin with linework initially. After I've established a good basis, I will map in the light shapes and shadow shapes on separate layers. Then, I draw or paint it in a variety of ways, from huge to the smallest of particulars.
To create the Streets of London painting I employed a similar method. To ensure neat edges and keep everything organized I used a lot of layers. Additionally, I had the main light on an additional layer.
Layers also help me worry less about making mistakes. But once I feel comfortable in the state of the painting I start to combine a couple of things, only keeping those things that I believe are important.
For me, colours are an "feel" factor, so I just go for the one that feels good. Also, I have a number of reference sources that I look at for help in choosing the right colours, sometimes I combine references, and at sometimes I just use the same.
It's definitely a good idea to learn about colour and light theory, so that you are aware of what could do to help make the general colour scheme and value more pronounced.
It's a bit difficult for me to say what the key to making my art... I like to experiment with different styles, mediums and subject matters and get inspired by others artists.
I'm still so early in my artistic journey that I is still trying to discover my identity as an artist and what my style is. One of the main differences nowadays is that I don't have to think about it as much as I used to , and I believe that's made significant changes.
