Celebrating History, Embracing Progress: International Women's Day 2024
Every year on March 8th, the world unites in celebration of International Women's Day (IWD). It's a time when we celebrate the amazing achievements of women, to reflect on their challenges as well as recommit towards a world where women are treated equally. As we look back, this day didn't blossom overnight. It's the culmination of struggle, resilience and unstoppable determination. This is why we celebrate the day, and invite you to as well take short journey through the history and culture of IWD as a testimony to the power of collective action.
Starting with Seeds of Change to a Global Movement
The seeds for IWD began to germinate during the first half of 20th century. It was a period where the struggle for women's rights gained momentum. On March 8 of 1857, a group of women were on strike to protest the poor working conditions and subpar rights for women in their trade of clothing. This protest called for a shorter work day and fair living wages. In 1908, on March 8 an organized march by female who worked in the trade of needles was organized to protest child labor, conditions in sweatshops, and demand women's suffrage. In 1910, two years after the march, March 8th became annually celebrated in the year of International Women's Day.
The Catalyst to Change
Throughout the 20th century, IWD served as a potent agent of transformation. It became a platform where women could raise their voices on issues like voting rights, fair working conditions, pay and the right to access education. In 1975 in 1975, IWD received recognition from the United Nations officially recognized IWD, solidifying its global significance.
A Day of Celebration and Action
Today, IWD is celebrated in countless ways, from awe-inspiring marches to intimate celebrations. This is a chance to celebrate outstanding women from every field, from scientists and artists to business owners and activists. But, IWD is not just an opportunity to celebrate, but an opportunity to take the action. It highlights that the struggle to achieve gender equality is far from over. We must continue to advocate for equality in opportunities, confront damaging stereotypes, and support women and girls all over the world. The theme for International Women's Day 2024 is " Invest in Women to accelerate progress" and includes the internationally used hashtag #InvestInWomen.
Based on the UN the UN, these five aspects are essential to push forward this hashtag to being outdated:
- Investing in women, one of the human rights issues:Time is running out. Equal gender representation is the biggest human rights problem, affecting all.
- Eliminating poverty In the wake of COVID pandemic and conflicts over the last 75 million people have fallen into severe in poverty as of in the year 2000. Action is urgently needed for preventing more than 342 million girls and women living in poverty by 2030.
- Implementing gender-responsive financing: Conflicts and rising prices may lead 75% of the countries to cut public spending until 2025. This will negatively impact women and their essential services.
- Moving to a more eco-friendly and caring society:The current economic system disproportionately affects women. The advocates advocate for a shift towards a green economy and care society to amplify women's voices.
- Supporting feminist change-makers: Despite leading efforts, feminist organizations receive only 0.13 percent of the official support for development.
Beyond the Day
While IWD is an important date, the goal of gender equality should not be limited to one day. Since we're a business founded around empowerment and inclusion, we strive to create an environment where women are able to thrive through the entire time. We are committed to fostering a climate of respect, professional growth and supporting women's rights, we're determined to be a part in the solutions.
Let's all celebrate the stories from the past, celebrate the accomplishments made, and work towards a future where every woman has the chance to reach her full potential. Take the time to select some of these events to participate in this year:
