We inquired with Titika about the key to making her photos in black and white.

"My Name is Titika Rotkjaer, I'm an artist hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark. Following my studies in communication in Roskilde University, Denmark, I transferred to Norway to study visual art initially at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts then in Bergen in Bergen, where I concluded my study in visual arts in the Bergen Academy of Art and Design and earned an MA in Textile Art. There is no formal training in photography. My understanding of editing and photography comes from continuous self-education.

Are you interested in learning more about my personal style? Would I like to discuss the way I express myself rather than style? I don't think of style... I tell stories through an intimate and poetic perspective Each image is a result of my concentrate on mood, expression, the ambience. The way I create my photos is a procedure. It is my goal to always refine and clear the meaning. In some instances, I redo old photographs if I gain new knowledge that enables me to come closer to the expression I was trying to achieve.

The key to making my mysterious photographs ...? For the majority of my photos that I have created over the past four years - I have been looking at the complexity and the self, while focusing on the relationship between the inner and external worlds. Some of my photographs - but not all - comprise digitally from several pictures (all, of course taken by myself).

My method usually starts with an intrigue or interest in exploring a topic or an array of emotions. I shoot, write notes, read and gain more knowledge, and shoot again. The process of working with my images frequently will lead me to create a new one out of many others. I create my work in a way that is subjective, experimental, and intuitively with themes to let the pictures develop. It's difficult to have an accurate vision of what I want to achieve to my eye, and after that, I shoot the components to construct the picture."
