In the afternoon of Sunday, I discovered Olga sharing Instagram posts about my childhood neighborhood. In the middle of Warsaw's concrete jungle, there is a less-known and revered green zone. I would visit it during the summer months to gaze at beautiful old pine trees and breathe in the fresh air of nature in my urban airways. In her tale, Olga visited this area in her first visit, but she was also captivated by one of the oldest backyards of Warsaw. And I bet that soon she will create the Boernerowo-inspired painting.
We asked Olga about the key to making her minimal collages and painting of landscapes that are human-shaped.
"My name is Olga Szczechowska, and I'm living in Warsaw. Since I was a little youngster, I've been painting and drawing often. I was a student at an art high school and took classes in Drawing as well as Cultural Studies at the University of Nicolaus Copernicus in Torun.
I'm a designer, artist, and illustrator occasionally a graphic designer. My work is a concentrate on the connection between humankind and nature by carefully observing the way we create the environment in our backyards. Through observing trimmed hedges or decorative plants as well as carefully designed gardens for homes I'm capturing the eerie beauty of the surroundings around us."
"For many years, I've created simple collages. These collages were drawn from landscapes, still-life, or were developed as a result from experimentation with forms, textures, and colours.
My style is eclectic as collage and painting are very different, but they have one thing that they share: they relax. I've heard this phrase from my audience many times, and I think that is the best description of my work. When I'm bored of painting, I make collages and vice versa. One style is a temporary way to escape the other.
I think observation is key. I pay attention to everything around me: nature, architecture, and objects. This is evident in my artwork. My artworks are not able to see the person, but you can feel the sense of human presence in trimmed hedges or in a cup left on the table."
